If a person owns a piece of land do they own it all the way down to the core of the earth?

Similarly do they own the sky above it?

Definitely a thought provoker! Think they have to own it all the way down, because otherwise it could be undermined. Not all the way up in the sky though (well, they need a reasonable amount of "head" space, but not so they can make airlines changes routes etc.

If gold was 1 mile down is it yours?

Places such as military basis forbid anything flying over. Is the sky theirs?

Well, I think that however far down you go it definitely IS yours, and should be. BUT, you've made me think a bit more about the "up" - I don't think it applies to ordinary people though, but of course places like military bases etc need to be able to check who goes over so they don't get bombed and stuff.

I can't agree with Waldo tho... I mean, if you went "down" far enough, you'd come out on the other side of the world... Is that piece of land also yours???
Anyway, where I live, most of the houses ARE undermined and beleive me, the Gold doesn't belong to us
Also, we live near (about 10 km's away) OR Tambo Airport (AKA Johannesburg International, AKA Jan Smuts Airport) and have planes flying over all the time... in fact, the "Airspace" belongs to the Airport...

Interesting question tho... I wonder if there are any laws governing this???
