I remember well the ZX80, ZX81, Vic20 and the Amiga500. I never owned on as when they where released it was beyond what my pocket money would stretch too, and more that my Mum could afford. I spent hours playing on them though as my mates would kindly loan me theirs (Thanks Steve!).
The first computer/ console that I owned was a Binatone games machine. I recall it had a couple of games, one of which was a pong type game

Hi Guys
I to remember have fond memories of these machines and spending many a late night playing games on them. For those who want have a little more than fond memories of the ZXSpectrum there are emulation sites out there where you can get hold of emulators. I believe that the Spectrum is the only one you get the ROMs for legaly because they where put into te public domain and given freely to all to have and use. For most of the rest you need to own the machine itself b4 you can get the ROMS. I personaly still play on the Spectrum from time to time using an emulator, sad but it is still great fun. I don't fancy falling foul of the unselicited rules on posting wesites so I wont post the web address but if you do a search try something like world of spectrum. You can find nearly all the old games there and those that are not is because they could not get permission from the owners to put them on their website. SteveGT |

Welcome to Siliconhell and thanks again for lending me your ZX all of those years ago Siliconhell is my site: You can post links relevant to this thread as long as they are legal and familly friendly One a different note: Ive found the first computer/console that was ever mine. I got it as a Christmas present all them years ago. The Atari 2600, released in October 1977, is the video game console credited with popularizing the use of microprocessor based hardware and cartridges containing game code, instead of having non-microprocessor dedicated hardware with all games built in. Check out the specifcations: CPU MOS 6507 @ 1.19 MHz RAM (within a MOS Technology RIOT chip): 128 bytes (additional RAM may be included in the game cartridges) ROM (game cartridges): 4 kb maximum capacity (32 kb+ with bank switching) Audio + Video processor: TIA. 160 x ~192 pixel, 128 colors (128 on screen. Max 4 per line without programming tricks), 2 channel mono sound. 1 square wave, 1 white noise. IS THAT IMPRESSIVE OR WHAT !!!!!

My favourite games were Manic Miner, Rygar, Jet Set Willy and Penetrator. I was lucky enough to find those sites with the free emulators and speccy games and when I really get bored with my big 3D games I spend hours playing those little games. The graphics were really horrific but we didn't know any better and they are still fun.
I am impressed Keighty....must have been a 128k. I think those ones came with a built in disk drive. You must have been flying with your hi tech computer Guru. Still have loads of problems with my current pc but it comes with the territory. Life just wouldn't be interesting without some problem or another to work on and I'd be without a job. |

I moved onto my 386 with a whole 2megs of ram, a floppy drive and a stiffy drive and a whole 212meg hard drive.
I had to order it from Johannesburg as they didn't have any computer shops here. The setup was supposed to came loaded with windows 3.1 and just to show you how stupid I was I thought the dosshell was windows. Only found out later that they forgot to load windows. The stupid machine crashed on me within 8 hours of getting it and after spending literally hours on the phone to Joburg they worked out that it was the motherboard. Took a couple of weeks to get it back. Spent alot of time playing around with the autoexec and config system to get the pc running faster. And of course memmaker. |

Too true Guru. Unfortunately the bigger they get, the bigger the problems.
It's funny that I can still play those old games and have fun but the bigger pc games like Doom feel ridiculous when I try and play them now. They are so dark. |
