Default What book should be required reading for all

My question to you all is: What book should be required reading for all high school pupils :?:

My suggestions are:
  • Animal Farm - George Orwell
    1984 - - George Orwell
    Charlottes Web
    I am David
    Kes

My last year of high school (called Matric, Standard 10 or Grade 12 in SA) back in 1987 we were required to read Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Macbeth and some other book (cannot remember what now).... I remember reading Animal farm in Std 8 (Grade 10 now)..
I think maybe more mordern writers should be considered required reading as well

Of Mice and Men..

Wish I had done 1984 at school. It's such a good book , better than Macbeth which was what we studied.

I'd suggest the following:

Lord of the Rings (I've read it about 6 times).
Machiavelli's "The Prince" (apologies for the spelling if it is wrong).
Hamlet.
The Bible.
The Chronicles of Narnia.
