My last year of high school (called Matric, Standard 10 or Grade 12 in SA) back in 1987 we were required to read Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Macbeth and some other book (cannot remember what now).... I remember reading Animal farm in Std 8 (Grade 10 now)..
I think maybe more mordern writers should be considered required reading as well

I'd suggest the following:
Lord of the Rings (I've read it about 6 times). Machiavelli's "The Prince" (apologies for the spelling if it is wrong). Hamlet. The Bible. The Chronicles of Narnia.
