"To my darling Candy. The characters in this book are ficticious....."

You MUST read "The Prince". It's the fascist dictator handbook.

As the Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia are 3 and 6 books respectively I'll let you off the hook. ;-)
The only other book I'd recommend is Robert Rankin's "Knees Up Mother Earth" where Brentford FC wins the FA Cup.

Errrmmmm !
I wasn't trying to insinuate you hadn't read the bible, just don't know of anyone who has actually read it from cover to cover... and the only book I've read in full from the above list is LOTR

Hmm...being a 'recent' high school graduate (2001 ) I can still remember all the books we were made to read. Such timeless classics as: 'Shane', 'Z for Zacharia', 'The Journey' by John Marsden, 'A Night to Remember', and my personal favourite, 'Cloudstreet'. :-x

Admittedly, we had a lot of great books too - 'Lord of the Files', 'Heart of Darkness', 'Catch 22', 'Catcher in the Rye', 'Macbeth' and 'Day of the Triffids'.

To be honest, I'm not sure I would make any books 'required reading', as what one person finds great, another person might see as nothing more than a 250 page sleeping pill. Having said that, any initiative which gets kids into reading (regardless of what exactly is being read) should totally be encouraged. Which is why 'Harry Potter' is so great. Despite the fact that I HATE Harry Potter myself, I think J.K. Rowling's done a wonderful job of getting kids interested in books again. (and I guess the same goes to a lesser extent to Lord of the Rings)
