Default Right handers

Why are the majority of people right handed :?:

The odds of being Left Handed is approx 1 in 10

Did you know that on average Right Handed people live longer, it's somthing like 9 years longer :!:

Why :?: :-k

Why are we preprogramed to be Right Handed :?: It's not like the tree branches where unsuitable for left handed apes

Can anybody enlighten me :?:

Cannot enlighten you at the moment mike, but found this rather interesting article in trying to find out why!!!

How Left-Handed Are You?
Have you ever chatted with your right-handed friends about being left-handed and that they scoff and say that they are completely right-handed? Well, you may be able to prove that they are less right-handed than they think. We have some fun tests and games that you could try with them to show that there are varying degrees of handedness.

It is only the dominance of one side of the brain that decides which side of the body you prefer to use. However, as we still have to use all the brain to fully control our bodies, we use the other side more than we think.

Get together with a group of friends and have a go at the following exercises. Remember that each task must be carried out instantly and without thinking about it.

- Imagine the centre of your back is itching. Which hand do you scratch it with?
- Interlock your fingers. Which thumb is uppermost?
- Imagine you are applauding. Start clapping your hands. Which hand is uppermost?
- Wink at and imaginary friend straight in front of you. Which eye does the winking?
- Put your hands behind your back, one holding the other. Which hand is doing the holding?
- Someone in front of you is shouting but you cannot hear the words. Cup your ear to hear better. Which ear do you cup?
- Count to three on your fingers, using the forefinger of the other hand. - Which forefinger do you use?
- Tilt your head to one shoulder. Which shoulder does it touch?
- Fixate a small distant object with your eyes and point directly at it with your forefinger. Now close one eye. Now change eyes. Which eye was open when the fingertip remained in line with the small object? (when the other eye, the non-dominant one, is open and the dominant eye is closed, the finger will appear to move to one side of the object.)
- Fold your arms. Which forearm is uppermost?

If you have always considered yourself to be right or left-handed you will now probably discovered that your body is less than total in its devotion to the left or right side. Whichever hand you use to write with, the chances are that you were not able to be 'right' 10 times.

Very Interesting

It's amazing how quick you can teach yourself to use youre other hand. I can shave, use a mouse etc with either my left or right hand. Although I havnt yet mastered writing with my left hand.

I am right handed, although when I was at school I broke my shoulder and for 6 months had my right arm in a sling. By the end of the 6 months I could write really neatly with my left hand.. which I found really odd...
Now when I try with my left hand it looks like a spider crawling around the page!

Proves the point you can do it if you really try and practise! I had to do my A levels writing with my left hand.. nightmare !!! Especially in computer science drawing charts and stuff!

i'm left handed, and do most things left handed, i can tenpin bowl left handed, but inleague i use my right hand!, when i play tennis or golf i use the equipment left handed, but i use a cricket bat primarily right handed even though i can use it left handed.

an oddity to the odds of left handedness, in my year 10 science class many years ago (okay only 19 years) the teacher was left handed and out of the 24 students 13 of us were left handed a majority

Wow the odds of that occuring are quite low :!:

I wonder if there was some sort of enviromental explanation :-k

Is left / right handedness genetic (is it passed from parent to child) :?:
