We were discussing this last night, and your views would be welcome..
If you had a water bed, and your house flooded, would your bed float or sink :?: I think the matress with all the water in would sink, but we were not sure... what do you all think about it?? MadCat

lol Some discussions. Ours is usually about who's going to make the last cup of tea
Anyway, I reckon if your house flooded the water bed would be the most likely cause. Therefore the bit without the water would sink. If it was something else I think it would float given there was enough water. |

what a post to pick as my first reply!...(hi folks :-) )
anyways..I'm guessing (educated guess..) that a water bed would be boyant. containing just water, submerged.. the water would weigh the same as the water it is submerged in (litre for litre) (edit: with no tempreature or current, water "floats" on water, why I edited this to add that bit I dont know.. kinda hard to explain at this time of night!), however as the waterbed itself is boyant the weight of the water in it, is cancelled by the weight of the water acting on it... therefore the boyancy of the bed itself would allow it to 'float'... I dont own a water bed, but I am assuming that they have air pockets to give it structure, again adding to the boyancy, and the fact that a water bed isnt pumped to capacity, there is some air in there so the water can move around, given the fredom for the water to level out, this air would form a pocket at the top of the bed if placed in a large enough body of water, again assiting with the floating... anyone with a lilo, even a play ring thing they use in paddling pools could test this theory. should only take a small amount of air in the container to make it float. (Like I said, one heck of a post to pick as my first!) |

I really don't think a water bed could flood a whole house unless you stay in a 10 x 10 or something similarly small...
Nice topic though, just wondering what act you were engaging in before the topic of discussion came up??? |

I didn't mean your water bed would flood your house... I meant if your house was flooded by an act of God or something, and you happened to own a water bed, would it float... Thanks to Jon_audio for his post... it makes sense... Now, does anyone know anyone in New Orleans that used to own a water bed that could prove this theory for us
