I believe this comes from early 1900s fairgrounds, where there could be a stall, maybe like hoop-la, and the prize was a cigar. So, for each failed attempt, the phrase 'Nice try, but no cigar' could be said as part of the stallholder's patter to encourage customers.

It's funny how sayings get changed. I have friend that says...
"Good thinking Batman" instead of "Good thinking 99" and she has never heard of 'Get Smart'.

I have never heard of "Good Thinking 99", I do know the saying "Good Thinking Batman". I use it regular
