Touch Wood

"The custom is thought to originate from Pagan times when trees were held in high esteem. People believed that 'wood spirits' inhabited the trees and woodlands. To touch a tree with respect is thought to indicate that the person was in search of protection from the particular wood spirit."

You do start when you become a parent and you cringe every time you hear yourself use any stupid expression used by your own parents #-o

My Mum used to say, "Eat your crusts. They'll put hairs on your chest."

As if I'd want them :!:

The saying is "It's cheap at twice the price". People always stuff that up.

I always liked "If you don't stop doing that I'll beat you to within an inch of your life".

Another goody was when you pulled faces "If the wind changes it will stay that way" and when I had dirty ears my Mum would say "I have to clean the potatoes out of your ears".

Default Nice try, but no banana

I believe the actual phrase is 'Nice try, but no cigar'.

I believe this comes from early 1900s fairgrounds, where there could be a stall, maybe like hoop-la, and the prize was a cigar. So, for each failed attempt, the phrase 'Nice try, but no cigar' could be said as part of the stallholder's patter to encourage customers.

Thanks for explaining that ;-) I know it as nice try no banana, I wonder if it has the same origin :?:

It's funny how sayings get changed. I have friend that says...
"Good thinking Batman" instead of "Good thinking 99" and she has never heard of 'Get Smart'.
