Hi everyone
I was just sitting, pondering life, the world and everything, and wondered how people came up with their user names. From what I can see on this site, only Mike has kept his own name (always supposing it IS his own name!). So, where do they come from? Mine, Waldo, comes from hearing, somewhere in the dim and distant past, of "The Magnificent Waldo" - a magician I believe. Of course, that could be a figment of my imagination too, but I've used the name Waldo on many sites, sometimes extending it to WaldoMage. Let's hear where your inspiration comes from.

My username came from a TV show on Sky1 called Gamezville.
"The Guru" This portion of the show featured the The Guru - supposedly filmed in the roof space above the studio (Series One) and then a disused lift shaft (Series Two). He would reply to requests for cheats or tips sent in by viewers, and was made to look like a mystic or a druid who claimed to have infinite knowledge. He was a comedy character who would often mock the viewers, calling them "Maggots" before giving out the cheats, and appearing to be constantly exasperated by the 'worthless' questions from viewers and the 'stupidity' of the two main presenters. Having been formed in the vacuum of space, some thirty thousand years ago, The Guru drifted to the gaming planet of Arcadia. Raised and trained by a prominent government figure, Yar-El, The Guru became the greatest gamer the small planet had ever seen. Unfortunately, the Golden Sphere of Arcadia began to crumble and in an effort to save his not-yet-mature surrogate son, Yar-El sent The Guru into space with only a scabby robe, even scabbier beads and a ten-in-one Atari joystick. Some two thousand years later, halfway through his first game of Asteroids, The Guru landed on earth and immediately set about finding the local videogame store. At the dawn of human civilisation however, Game did not have many outlets, forcing The Guru to 'get some fresh air'. The following twenty-three thousand years were a dark time for The Guru, but he made the most of it by gaming on a larger scale. The Pyramids, for example are simply left overs from a game of Tetris, the hanging gardens of Babylon the result of an early form of Buckaroo and the Temple of Artemis, Lighthouse of Alexandria and Mausoleum at Halicarnassus were all constructed by The Guru to allow him to indulge in a little tomb raiding. In fact, there are few marvels of the world that are not attributable to The Guru in some way, but needless to say The Guru is happier with a controller in his hand than sixteen hundred tonnes of Babylonian sandstone. ![]() The character had a sarcastic and humorous nature, like me I think this is a great thread so I've made it sticky (It remains at the top)

I tried loads of different names - all the good ones seem to have been taken, and as I don't have much of an imagination I picked Manor.
The name of my house “Gladstone Manor” no idea why it is just carved in stone on the property.

Mines a similar story to Manor's
I used to chat in an IRC chatroom a few years ago and had to come up with a nickname on the spur of the moment, for some reason I chose the name "Wallnutz" (not really sure why, it kind of just popped into my head)... eventually, it got shortened to nutz and then to Nutty... The ZA on the end was because when I registered on Siliconhell, the name Nutty was already taken by someone else, so i used the international code for South Africa(ZA) on the end of my nick...
