You do this in your profile (I think), but when they are turned on and you click on one, all you'll see in the box where you type is the printed characters, only when you preview or submit, will it show the emoticon!

If your really stuck you can get some help on the web site [Reference Removed by Admin] it is all about minipops europops and much more good fun check it out lots of cool stuff but it a pretty direct way of getting the answers so if you would rather figure it out then dont look at the mini pops bit on the site but still check out the rest !!!?!?!? :-o
