yes, it is a bit tricky.. Here's a hint, look near the rock in the Yard, and also on the ground by the well..
finding all the birds is hard too... They are not essential to you finishing, BUT if you don't it basically tells you that you've left without solving the secret puzzle...  I had to start again from the beginning... | ||||||||

got both items from there & got the piece from the safe, got another piece from the armoryand the grate. so now i have a lighter, a book, a piece of cloth & a screwdriver that i have no idea what to do with lol!

So did you get the Hook and the String? Or the Key in the Yard?
Try using a combining a couple of the things you have already mentioned  | ||||||||

key in the yard? got the key from the sink from the string & hook, and used that to get the piece from the grate aswell, but not got a key from the yard?
