Help! How do I chosse a broadband provider?

I need help! I've decided that I'm paying to much for my bradband and terlephone service with my current provider. So I've reluctently cancelled my contract even though they've always been fantastic with me Now I'm wondering if I've made a big mistake.


I was wanting to move to Tiscali because a friend of mine is with them and says they're good but on the internet I'm finding bad reviews.

Now I don't know who to believe Can anyone help?

I had a year-long run in with Tiscali, they kept on charging us through BT, BT said they could not stop the payment, Tiscali said I signed up, which I never did, and could never prove I did, depsite constant asking for evidence. I cannot even remember now if I got my money back or was just so glad they had finally stopped charging me I left it at that!

PlusNet were always good to me, although left them for AOL to get this free laptop offer thing you here through the CarPhone Warehouse

My Advice:

• Set a budget for yourself and stick to it
• People seldom give feedback unless they are complaining
• Dont be afraid to say a potential ISP "Do you have any special offers on?" and "Is that your best price?"
• In my opinion 512kb is ok for basic web browsing, dont be sold 4mb unless you need it
• Ask friends which they use, are they good, bad .....
• Consider a package deal (phone + internet etc...)

We use a cable provider called Virgin Media. I have friends using Sky, BT, Wanadoo and Tiscali.

Personally I'd stay away from AOL

Thanks for the advice guys it's just hard to know who to believe. On one wedsite Tiscali were getting bad reviews and on another the were 72% customer satisfaction

This is more difficult than I antisipated. If you make the wrong decision then you're stuck with it.

I have been with blueyonder - virgin now
I have always been happy with them - real people with a personality on the other end of the phone. They may not be the cheapest but .....you get what you pay for

We have a 20mb link with them Not cheap, but darn fast

Have you used a speedtest to find out how quick your connection actually is? There is one in this thread

I agree, I've had some good laughs with some of the staff there. Not too many levels of menu to get where you want either, which is always a good thing

We have had really good service for the last 10 years, a few before that they were dreadful, but they really got better and I think are excellent now

Virgin Media is a big company now with many products and services. I think what they are refering to is Virgin Media's Cable broadband service. To use this particular service you need to be in a 'cabled area'. You can check if your area covered by using the postcode checker on this page
