Like most things, I think there's a time and a place for them.
My wife bought one a while back because she had to go up to Wigan for work and doesn't like driving motorways on her own when she doesn't know where she's going. The only time I would use one really is for going into London or any unfamiliar big city centre. The number of times I've driven round London with an A-Z balanced on my lap (why are they always so small?) I know people that use them all the time and I think it's a shame because I think map reading is an important skill that sat-nav replaces. I used to work all over the UK before sat-nav was available in today's form and managed perfectly well to navigate the length of the country with a trusty petrol station road atlas. Most of my work then was on construction sites and the only info I was ever given was an address and a faxed, hand-drawn map showing about 1 square mile surrounding the site and that was it!!

Wigan - that's where we are!
I wouldnt get one, like SabreDragon I prefer to plan my route before with the UK road map book.. I do often drive with an Autoroute plan in my hand though, which isn't really very safe. I wouldnt buy a sat nav though as I think they are a waste of money and a distraction to concentration. MadCat |

Im not a fan of SatNav for normal drivers, they turn peoples brains off! I think that they are great for the emergency services and couriers etc...

London cabbies have to do the knowledge So harping back to the emergency services maybe they should do something like the knowledge if they dont already As for couriers (white van man) would the Sat Nav be able to talk them round the streets as fast as they drive Ohh yes the crease in the map

Did you hear about the number of cases in Germany and a few other places in Europe where people have turned into barriers and massive ditches where there was no road, just because the sat nav said to turn?? Utter proof that they turn off the brain when using! MadCat
