It is Norton Antivirus that is installed and I updated it last night. I did a full disk scan and it found 1 Trojan attached to a system file which it removed. Now when I reboot it says it can't find that system file. Also I got an error message that said "msimmn.exe - Application Error" and something to do with an instruction reference to a memory location being invalid. Is it worth re-installing XP?

The link below may be the answer, it may not be though
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS06-016.mspx

However before you do that, have you installed all of the available updates at www.windowsupdate.com :?: I think that you need to do this ASAP :!:

Do you know if your router has a built in firewall :?: If it does not then you are liable to online attacks, these could be responsible for some of your problems ;-)

Yeah all the windows updates are installed and the router has a firewall. I'll have a look at that link.

OK, like I said it may or may not help :-?

It may be quicker to perform a clean install of XP but you need to ensure that you have all your drivers first, and that you have backed up your data.

Good Luck :!:

Still freezes randomly with no error messages. Currently trying to find XP discs to re-install!
When I boot up windows I get an error message saying it can't find a particular system file. I think that file was put there by a Trojan that Norton found and removed, now XP looks for it everytime it boots up. Does that make sense? (When I put the file name into google it came back as being one that is created by a Trojan, not a genuine windows file).

Yes that makes sense, you may be able to find more info on how to stop it being called at startup from the Symantec website http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/hom...dex_virus.html

Search for it at the bottom of the Symantec page ;-)
