Default Logic: Got Logic?

1. Mom, Dad, and 2 kids have come to a river, and they find a boat. It is small and can only carry one adult or 2 kids at a time. Both kids are good rowers, but how can the whole family reach the other side of the river?

2. Because cigars cannot be entirely smoked, a hobo who collects cigar butts can make a cigar to smoke out of every 5 butts that he finds. Today, he has collected 25 cigar butts. How many cigars will he be able to smoke?

3. There is a barrel with no lid and some wine in it. "This barrel of wine is more than half full," said Curly. "No it's not," says Mo. "It's less than half full."
Without any measuring implements and without removing any wine from the barrel, how can they easily determine who is correct?

4.An old man wanted to leave all of his money to one of his three sons, but he didn't know which one he should give it to. He gave each of them a few coins and told them to buy something that would be able to fill their living room. The first man bought straw, but there was not enough to fill the room. The second bought some sticks, but they still did not fill the room. The third man bought two things that filled the room, so he obtained his father's fortune. What were the two things that the man bought?

5. You are standing in front of a room with one lightbulb inside of it. You cannot see if it is on or off. Outside the room there are 3 switches in the off positions. You may turn the switches any way you want to. You stop turning the switches, enter the room and know which switch controls the lightbulb. How?

6. A man went on a trip with a fox, a goose and a sack of corn. He came upon a stream which he had to cross and found a tiny boat to use to cross the stream. He could only take himself and one other - the fox, the goose, or the corn - at a time. He could not leave the fox alone with the goose or the goose alone with the corn. How does he get all safely over the stream?

7. What goes around the world, but stays in the corner?

8. Suppose you want to send in the mail a valuable object to a friend. You have a box which is big enough to hold the object. The box has a locking ring which is large enough to have a lock attached and you have several locks with keys. However, your friend does not have the key to any lock that you have. You cannot send the key in an unlocked box since it may be stolen or copied. How do you send the valuable object, locked, to your friend - so it may be opened by your friend?

9. A man was found murdered on Sunday morning. His wife immediately called the police. The police questioned the wife and staff and got these alibis:
The Wife said she was sleeping.
The Cook was cooking breakfast.
The Gardener was picking vegetables.
The Maid was getting the mail.
The Butler was cleaning the closet.

The police instantly arrested the murdered. Who did it and how did they know?

10. How can you clasp someone's hands together in such a manner that they cannot leave the room without unclasping them?

10 tokens for each correct answer no cheating! LOL

An excellent set of puzzles. I've come across all but 4, 7 and 10 before, so I'll let others have a go before I try

Hmmm....interesting questions! Let's have a go.

1. Firstly the two kids row across, then Kid 1 rows it back. He gets out, and Mum rows it across, and Kid 2 rows it back. Kid 1 gets back in, and both kids row across. Kid 2 gets out, and Kid 1 rows the boat back. Kid 1 gets out, and Dad rows it across. He gets out and Kid 2 rows it back. Then both kids get in, row across and the family can continue their journey.

2. He collects 25 butts. At 5 butts to a cigar, that makes 5 cigars. However, those 5 cigars produce another 5 butts, and therefore another cigar, making 6 in total.

3. Assuming the barrel is a normal barrel-shaped symetrical type barrel....it should be tilted until the wine is just about to start pouring out. If the wine level in the tilted barrel comes to the opposite bottom corner of the barrel, it is exactly half full. If it is below the corner, it is less than half full. If it is above the corner, it is more than half full!

4. Hmmm....I'll hazard a guess that he buys something like a candle and a flute, filling the room with light and music (rather than anything more concrete, anyway)

5. Q5 is too tricky for me at the moment! :-k

6. I wonder if it is the same boat and/or stream as Q1?.....
Anyway, the man rows across with the goose, leaving the fox and corn. He leaves the goose on the other side and rows back. He collects the fox and rows across. He leaves the fox on the other side, and rows back with the goose. He leaves the goose at the start again and rows across with the corn. He leaves the corn with the fox on the other side, then rows back, picks up the goose and rows across again, thus reuniting goose, fox and corn.

7. No idea!

8. Aside from maybe putting a combination lock on the box and telling your friend the combination, I'm stumped.

9. I'll guess that they arrested the maid. Something to do with there not being any mail delivered on a Sunday? (although it would kinda depend where in the world the puzzle was set)

10. If they clasp their hands around the leg of a piano/sofa/dining table/elephant or other large heavy object, unless they are really, really strong, they're not going anywhere without unclasping their hands!

5. You turn 2 switches "on" and leave 1 switch "off" and wait about a minute. Then enter the room, but just before you enter, turn one switch from "on" to "off". Once in the room, feel the light bulb - if it is warm, but off, it has to be the last switch you turned off. If it is on, it has to be the switch left on. If it is cold and is off, it has to be the switch you left in the off position.

7. A stamp ;-)

8. Send the box with a lock attached and locked. Your friend attaches his or her own lock and sends the box back to you. You remove your lock and send it back to your friend. Your friend may then remove the lock she or he put on and open the box
