A stolen snake was found in Australia - after it ate an endangered marsupial fitted with a tracking device.

The 6ft 7in carpet python was taken by thieves from a research centre near Perth just after it had eaten the woylie.

After picking up the signal from the air, scientists and police tracked it on foot to a house in Heathridge, reports local media.

"It's fair to say the people were shocked when we turned up," Sgt Damian Ellson said. "They had no idea the snake had a tracking device inside its stomach."

The python ate the woylie, which is a small mammal, in the wild at Narrogin, complete with transmitter, and was brought to the centre so the tracking device could be removed from the snake.

The snake would have died had rescuers not found her. She will be released after she regurgitates the tracker.

Joondalup Police have charged a 31-year-old man with receiving stolen goods. The investigation is ongoing

It makes me mad when I hear people feeding any little animal to their snakes. Animal responsibility is what it's all about.

Lucky primates are herbivores Guru, or you'd starve too.

Which is exactly what I am saying. There is a certain diet to feed certain animals. In Australia, we have a lot of endangered animals, because people don't care about animal welfare. I'm sure if I fed my girls dolphin or whale (not that I ever would ), there would be an an uproar.

Do you think lambs are cute? Do you eat them??

Everything deserves to eat. In the wild snakes will eat anything that crosses their path, they are not that fussy. We feed Sid defrosted mice. They are bred in a lab (to be infection free) and are bred solely for the exotic pet industry as food... when our cats bring back mice from the fields, I cuddle them, make sure they are OK and then let free back in the field - everything deserves it's best chance to survive.

It isn't if an animal is cute or not that makes it edible. Here in Oz, we have a high list of endangered native species, due to an overkill by both natural and unnatural causes. A lot of cases though are due to unnatural causes, because of people shooting animals for nothing but pure pleasure and sports purposes.

We actually eat a lot of "roo" here in Oz, because it is overbred naturally. Yet, I think they're cute.

Fair enough! That sounds a fair reason.
