Appologies in advance BUT I had to carry on with my rant about crime in SA... here's the latest "incident"... it seems these things are reported in the news daily
01/10/2008 13:17 - (SA) Johannesburg - A 23-year-old man was arrested in Main Reef road in Johannesburg Central, for hijacking and attempted murder, Gauteng police said on Wednesday. Captain John Maluleke said police were on a routine patrol at 01:35 on Tuesday when they received information about a hijacked red Golf. The Golf was reported stolen in Actonville, and a tracking device in the car indicated that it was in the Johannesburg Central area. Police spotted the vehicle on Selby road with four men inside, but when they tried to stop the car, it sped off. Shots fired A chase ensued. The men jumped out of the car in Main Reef road and ran. One of the men fired two shots at the police who returned fire and wounded the man. The man was taken to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital under police guard, where he was treated. He was discharged and taken to the Johannesburg cells. The Golf was recovered, and the other three men were still at large. The 23-year-old would appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon on charges of hijacking and attempted murder, said Maluleke. Sorry about these depressing stories... it's just starting to get to me and I feel I need to make other people aware of it... Todays sideline story in the papers...
Johannesburg - A 32-year-old man was shot dead with his own firearm in an apparent botched hijacking on the N1 highway north-west of Johannesburg on Thursday morning, police said. His wife, who was sitting in the car when he was killed, was unharmed, said Captain Julia Claassen. "A 32-year-old man and his wife were driving on the N1 between Malibongwe and William Nichol off-ramps at about 03.45 when their vehicle hit a rock in the road. (This is a common trick by criminals... they put rocks in the road early hours in the morning so you hit them and damage your tyres so you have to stop) "They stopped the vehicle and he got out to change the tyre while his wife was still sitting in the vehicle. "He was approached by four men who overpowered him, took his firearm and they then allegedly shot him with his own firearm," said Claassen. He died on the scene. The suspects fled with only the firearm, leaving his wife and the car behind. "The motive for the killing is being investigated by the police," said Claassen. Traffic was backed up as one lane in the northerly direction was closed to allow the police to investigate the crime scene.
