Default Moz woman 'gives birth to cups'

This is a Serious news report from Mozambique.... This is why Africa is in so much trouble... people really beleive these stories
Maputo -
A Mozambican woman recently gave birth to three cups in the southern province of Gaza, independent television channel Stv reported on Thursday, showing images of the crockery.

The channel said the 18-year-old woman who lives in Xai Xai, gave birth to the cups on her way to hospital after she had complained of labour pains.

Images of the three cups were shown on the television station and the woman said she was three months pregnant at the time of the "birth".
The Mozambican association of traditional healers (Ametramo) told the station that there was nothing strange about the story.

Ametramo president Aulerio Demoraz said similar cases had occurred in other parts of the world due to witchcraft.
He said the woman needed to be treated with traditional medicines in order to exorcise the "evil spirits" which made her give birth to the cups.

You know, there are some odd people in the world. In today's society how can anyone believe such a story...

I know there are tribes that still believe in witches and the like, but they are few and far between.. to get a story like that on the web is very sad...

Sadly, in Africa, that's not true...
Most Black Africans beleive in Witchcraft (even Jacob Zuma who will be SA's next President)... if you read newspapers aimed at the black population, the majority of articles are about how someone has been cursed or something of the sort... most of the classified ads in these papers are from "traditional healers" advertising "help with falling pregnant", "help with removing curses" , "buying curses" etc, etc, etc... I know it sounds unbelievable but sadly it's the reality in Africa...

That's really scary - everyone thinks that the "modern" world has stopped such beliefs, but I think these things feed on themselves, and coincidences become something they point to as "proof" - very disturbing.

Wow - I'm shocked.

In the UK you get nothing like that. It's odd that people still believe in that sort of stuff. I thought the missionaries had drilled it out of peoples believe systems

Here's a story from local south african nwes site news24.com
It's about a puppy that was found speared and then buried alive in a "Muthi" ritual (Muti is an African word for Traditional Medicine)...
Fortunately, the puppy was found and is recovering nicely...
http://www.news24.com/News24/South_A...370032,00.html

There are also cases when children have been found mutilated and body parts used for "Muthi"... there was a case a few months back where a little girl (I think she was 2 or 3) was murdered and her eyes were removed and "buried" in the wall of a hair salon because the owner beleived it would bring in customers...

Also, there is a high incidence of child/baby rape in this country because there is a belief that having intercourse with a virginal child will cure AIDS... the worst part about this(if it could be any worse) is that in most of the cases, the perpatrator is normally and uncle or cousin of the child

Eek! I didn't know that people still believed in that stuff. Scary!

Have they not asked themselves. "If I were an evil spirit why would I make a woman give birth to cups?" I think any sensible person would, believer or not.

Well obviously not.

While we consider it completely mad, I imagine there are people who take advantage of people who have these beliefs and it's probably rather profitable. Which in turn does nothing to stop the belief cycle it just perpetuates it and the abuses can continue to make further profits.

A colleague of mine did some work at a tuna canning plant in Africa. He brought back one of the local papers. To say that I was amazed by the content was is somewhat of an understatement

It had a front page story about a witch bringing down a jumbo jet

And here is naive me thinking that any country that had electricity would have cast off the fear of spirits and curses. And as for the ignorance of STDs and AIDS well I was gob smacked!

I'd better stop before I really rant

Like I said above I really must be naive

Welcome back Mike - hope you're feeling better. And no, you're no more naive than the rest of us - think we were all a bit gobsmacked by this one.
