A young couple are beating the credit crunch by getting married for just £597.29.
With the average cost of a wedding recently reported to have topped £20,000, Odette Fenwick and Chris May were determined not to let theirs break the bank. Odette,19, told the Daily Mirror: "I would've liked a big wedding but it's too expensive. It's better like this as we've enjoyed the bargain hunting." She bought her dress online from eBay for £52, while second-hand rings for the pair cost £19. Odette and Chris, 21, are laying on £40 worth of Iceland food for close family at the reception - in the garage door showroom where Chris works - but other guests have been asked to bring their own. Instead of champagne to toast the newlyweds, they will be drinking 89p-a-bottle Chardonnay. The couple, from Ilfracombe in Devon, have even persuaded a radio station to loan them a car for their 16 August register office ceremony and a local newspaper photographer will take pictures. Odette said: "I am looking forward to the big day. Then with the money we save we are hoping to move into our first home in October. I'd consider a posh second wedding one day if we can afford it but it wouldn't be half as much fun. "The best bargain is my dress. It has never been worn and a perfect fit. It's as if it was made for me." I think that is ace Chris added: "I'm so happy I don't mind what sort of wedding it is." |

That's fantastic, they have certainly been creative.

Adding up what they say they paid for things, there seems to be an awful lot of money left over for that 89p chardonnay - there will definitely be sore heads!

Good on them for saving some money BUT doesn't anyone think they're a little too young to be getting married? (Or am I just being an old Fart again)

Our wedding is going to cost us about 20K (AUD), and I told my boyfriend that he can't pull out now. Too much has been organised already.

It's painful how much weddings cost now. I can't remember how much mine cost (it was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay long ago!), but as it was only at 3 weeks notice, probably not much. I remember the registry office, a bar in a hotel for the reception and that's it. I was 18 at the time. And in case you are wondering - NO, not still together, but did last 7 years, so not bad, considering. I've been with my current partner for 14 years now, not married, and happily so - and think it will stay that way if that's what it might cost to tie the knot!

Ours cost +-R50 000-00 which is a lot of money but that's nothing compared to £20,000-00

Yeah - getting married today is far too expensive for my liking - just go on holiday to one of the islands and get married there - no fuss not mess - and you are already on honeymoon.
I think far too many women try and compete with each other in wanting a better wedding - just think, take that R50,000 and place it on a deposit for a nice house - money invested - spend it on a wedding - money not invested. I have been married for 15 years - and still very happy - and we did not have anything fancy at the time. |
