A man in New Zealand has been charged with using a hedgehog as a weapon, the New Zealand Herald has reported.
Police said William Singalargh, 27, had hurled the hedgehog about 5m (16ft) at a 15-year-old boy. "It hit the victim in the leg, causing a large, red welt and several puncture marks," said Senior Sgt Bruce Jenkins, in the North Island town of Whakatane. It was unclear whether the hedgehog was still alive when it was thrown, though it was dead when collected as evidence. The police spokesman said the suspect was arrested "for assault with a weapon, namely the hedgehog." Mr Singalargh is due to appear in court on 17 April. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.

Wellington - A New Zealand man who assaulted a teen by hitting him with a hedgehog has been fined by a court and ordered to pay most of his fine to his victim.
Whakatane District Court was told on Thursday that William Singalargh picked up the hedgehog and threw it several metres at a 15-year-old boy in the North Island east coast town of Whakatane on February 9. Police said the teen was hit in the leg, causing a large, red welt and several puncture marks. The injury did not require medical treatment. Singalargh was convicted of common assault and offensive behaviour following a defended hearing. He had pleaded innocent to the charges. He was fined a total of NZ$700 (R4 133), of which NZ$500 was paid to his victim. A more serious charge of assault with a weapon - the hedgehog - was dropped. The maximum penalty for that charge is five years in prison. It was not known whether the hedgehog was dead or alive at the time of the attack, but Senior Sergeant Bruce Jenkins said earlier that it was dead when collected as evidence.
