Hello
We have kittens (William - Ginger/White 1 year old and Sam - Black 9 months old) and have had them both since babies, they have both been very good when it comes to using the litter tray but recently William has started to use the floor next to the litter tray (luckily its in a conservtory so not carpetted) for his number 2's! he uses the litter tray for when he wee's though which baffles us. We have changed the litter several times but he still does it. We even got a second litter tray so they have 1 each but he still refuses to use it. Apart from rubbing his paws in the tray we are struggling to find a reason why he would do it so close to the litter tray - if he just wanted to poo he could do it anyway in the house but he doesn't. Any ideas ? Norrec |

It must be a seasonal thing as Jack has started to do exactly the same thing. Yesterday he missed the tray and did his number 2 down our full length curtains.. I was not too happy with him!!
Do they both use the same tray? If there is a wee in there, they may not be happy getting back in to do something else. They like a nice clean tray.. Is the number 2 OK, I mean they dont have upset stomach or anything? MadCat

Yeah they both use the same tray and don't seem to mine if the other one has used it.
The number 2's are fine and look normal (seems strange talking about it!!) We can only think that he see's that room as his toilet but its strange he still uses the tray for his wee's. They are due to go outside soon in the spring so hopefully they will poo on someone else's floor! Norrec |

All I can think of is that if one of them has had a wee, then the other one may not want to go in and have the other. Also, if the wee is in the middle of the tray, then they don't have much room to stand there after to do the other, and they may decide to use the nearest point, rather than get dirty feet!! if you are concerned, talk to your vet. I am not trained, I am just a cat owner who reads a lot of behavioural books and mags.. I can only offer you advice, but I may be completely wide of the mark. MadCat

Thanks
Will see how it goes the next couple of weeks and try a few things and see what happens. Will speak to the vet as well. Norrec |

Get a bigger cat tray or a smaller cat
In addition to MadCats advice: Have you recently changed the type of Catlit that you use, or have you considered trying another :?: is the Cat tray too close to: The cats food bowl, the radiator,... Good Luck ;-) Mike... |

Tried a few cat litters to see it will help but it doesn't. The Litter Tray is in a seperate room to the food trays etc and there is no heating in there. He was fine until about 2 months ago and now its every day :/

Jack has been exactly the same... but with him it's the weather. With it being so cold he won't go outside... but yours don't go out yet..

They are old enough to go outside now, so hopefully they are using the neighbours lawn for a little tray now
I just need to find a way to stop them from removing their collars, I've tried several kind and they always come back with them missing! Norrec |
