Yep, even a small amount is fatal.
This information below is taken from the April issue of Your Cat: Chocolate is highly toxic to cats, and can be fatal. Cocoa bean products contain a chemical called Theobromine, which our pets cant clear from their bodies. Symptoms of poisoning include excessive drinking, vomiting, diorrhoea, slow heart rate and in the later stages, convulsions. If your pet displays any of these symptoms contact a vet. If caught early, this can be treated. The easter lily should be kept out of cats reach as they can cause kidney failure. Even small amounts can cause severe poisoning and need urgent vet treatment. I always make sure when we bring the choccie box in that Jack stays well away.
He does like nibbling empty wrappers though, but I dont think that there is any harm in that.. we dont leave any choccie !!!! Not that Im a choccoholic or anything !! Honest!! Even if i did get Cadburys shares for my birthday as I buy so much of it! MadCat

Just make sure that you don't let any of your cats nibble your choccie whilst you are not looking.

This is an excerpt from April Sainsburys Magazine:
Chocolate often has a finger pointed at it for being high in caffeine, which sets our nerves jingling. Yet where one cup of instant coffee conatins 80mg, a standard bar of Milk Chocolate contains only between 2 and 23mg Caffeine (5-35 for dark chocolate). Nor is there evidence to support the belief that chocolate gives us spots. Interestingly, as far as our teeth are concerned, chocolate is one of the "better" sweet treats in which to indulge. Dental researchers have found that the cocoa butter in chocolate coats the surface of the teeth, creating a form of physical barrier against attack from sugar and bacteria, which damage enamel and cause decay. By this time, I would not blame you if you were dancing for joy and wolfing down a bar of your favourite choccy treat, but and there is always a "but" with nutrition when things look too good to be true - you need to put all of the benefits in context. If you are like most normal people going about a normal life, the high density of calories means that the amount of chocolate you eat needs to be controlled. Eat too much and you'll gain weight, and any benefit you get from the heart protecting flavonoids will be wiped out by the extra pounds you end up carrying. Once in your mouth, chocolate stimulates your taste buds which , when excited cause your brain to release "happy" chemicals called endorphins. Chocolate also contains a substance called "anadamide" which excites the part of your brain that is stimulated by addictive drugs. Combine these 2 potent feel good feelings when you are munching your favourite bar with the natural energy lift you get from the sugar and it is no wonder thay sticking to just one or two squares and saving the rest for later is so hard! So it is good for you, in moderation! Madcat
