Hate to be the one to take the fun out of this story but I see this from a different point of view.
Could these extra fingers and toes be a product of evolution? Concidering how much humans have come to depend on them since coming down from the trees and walking upright it could be. Evolution is a slow process so small stumps that are of no use could only be the begining. Even now Humans still have a stump of a tail, the coxex (could be spelt wrong).
I should lighten up this is what happens to me when lack of sleep kicks in.
I must have been so annoying in college coz I was a insomniac
