Backing for calls to raise UK drinking age to 21
LEADING public figures last night backed calls for a smoking-style ban on drinking alcohol as a method of curbing drink-fuelled violence among the young.
Gary Newlove, a father-of-three, from Warrington, was murdered after a confrontation with youths. A car parked in his street had been vandalised.
The 47-year-old died on Sunday, two days after the gang hit him, triggering a brain haemorrhage.
On Tuesday, Cheshire Chief Constable Peter Fahy reacted to the death by saying he would like to see the legal drinking age raised by three years, as well as introducing the smoking-style ban in public places.
He suggested the drastic measures after claiming alcohol was fuelling a wave of violence and disorder across Britain and attacking parents for not controlling their children
