Usually between 4 - 5%.
It's only an estimate. There's a formula where you take Specific Gravity readings before and after and plug the values in.
Home brewing has 2 rules which if you follow you will rarely go wrong.
1 - STERILISE everything properly. Your gear literally cannot be clean enough. I am retentive so I sterilise before & after every batch.
2 - FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS to the letter. I don't know how much information is available & what sort of kits are available in the UK but Australia has a heap of information on home brewing & home brewing shops are all over the place.
Like anything you just do your research & don't try to be too creative until you've done it for a while. I have made about 200 batches of home brew, so I tend to tinker.
It is really cheap to make. The most expensive batch I made cost me about $40 (15 pounds) for about 32 large bottles (22 litres).
